Thinking about becoming a Utility Warehouse Partner? Good news: getting started is simple, it costs very little, and you can fit it around whatever else is going on in your life. Here's exactly how it works, step by step.
I'm Alexander, an Independent Utility Warehouse Partner, and this is the guide I wish I'd had when I started.
First, what does a UW Partner actually do?
A UW Partner helps households bring their Gas, Electricity, Broadband, Mobile and Insurance together with Utility Warehouse, usually for a lower total cost. You're self-employed, so you work with UW rather than for it. You choose your own hours, and you're rewarded when the people you help become customers. If you'd like the full picture first, read what the UW Partner role involves.
How to become a UW Partner in 7 simple steps
- Have a chat with a Partner. The best first step is a relaxed conversation with someone who already does it. Ask anything you like: how the money works, how much time it takes, what a typical week looks like. There's no obligation.
- Register with UW. It costs £10 to register, then it's free for 3 months and £3 a month after that to cover training, support and tools. That's it. There's no stock, no kit and no big upfront investment.
- Do the training. UW's training walks you through the services, how to compare someone's bills and how to help them switch. You go at your own pace, from home.
- Write your list. Jot down the people you know: family, friends, neighbours, workmates, folk from your club or church. Almost everyone pays household bills, so almost everyone is someone you could help.
- Have your first conversations. Start with the people who already know and trust you. The person who brought you into UW can do the the presentations till you become acquainted with how to do it alone. You will NOT be left on your own! Together you'll look at their bills, and save them money, help them switch. Your first few customers are a great confidence boost.
- Look after your customers. Happy customers stay with UW and recommend you to others. That's how your income keeps growing over time.
- Keep a steady rhythm. An hour or two a week, every week, is what builds a Partner business. Consistency beats bursts of effort every time.
What you need, and what you don't
You'll need: a phone, a bit of time each week, and a genuine interest in helping people save money.
You won't need: sales experience, an office, a van, stock or a big pot of money to get going. Most Partners start with no sales background at all. The role is really about having friendly, genuine conversations helping folk.
How you get paid
There are two parts to a Partner's income:
- Upfront payments. When someone you help switches, you receive a one-off payment. UW says this can be up to £300 per eligible customer taking three or more core services.
- Ongoing (residual) income. A monthly share of your customers' bills for as long as they stay with UW. Because people rarely move a bundled bill, this builds up nicely over time.
I've laid out the full picture in How Much Do UW Partners Earn?
Can I do it alongside a job?
Absolutely. Lots of Partners start part time, in the evenings or at weekends, and build it up gradually. Others are retired, or fit it around the school run. You set the pace.
Partner or Connector?
If you'd rather simply recommend people and let me do the talking, there's a lighter option called a UW Connector. Compare the two in UW Connector vs UW Partner.
