Utility Warehouse history: 30 years from a pub chat in 1996 to 1.4 million customers, with a birthday cake and Wee Hoose from Energy Bill Savers

In 1996, a few folk got chatting over a pint in a pub in Henley-on-Thames. That chat turned into a wee home phone service. Thirty years on, it's Utility Warehouse, with 1.4 million customers right across the UK.

This month UW celebrates its 30th birthday. As a UW Partner here in Glasgow, I thought it was worth telling the Utility Warehouse history, because it explains a lot about why UW works the way it does, and why it might be worth a look for your household.

From a pub chat to a home phone service

Utility Warehouse didn't start with a big launch or a flashy advert. It started with a simple idea talked over in a pub: what if households could get their home services from one company, on one bill, and save money by doing it?

The first product, in 1996, was a home phone line. Energy, broadband, mobile and insurance came later, one by one, until UW became what it calls a "multiservice" provider.

Utility Warehouse History: 1.4 million customers

Today UW supplies more than 3 million home services to around 1.4 million customers. That's Gas, Electricity, Broadband, Mobile and Insurance, all with one supplier and on one monthly bill.

UW also says that, together with its Partners, it has saved customers over £30 million in the last five years alone.

Built on word of mouth, not adverts

Here's the bit most people don't know. UW has never grown by splashing out on TV adverts and price comparison sites. It grows through people like me: independent Partners who recommend it to friends, neighbours and local folk.

That's why you won't see me running paid ads. Instead, I sit down with people (or chat on the phone), look honestly at what they're paying now, and show them whether UW would work out cheaper. If it doesn't, I'll tell you.

What it means for your household

Thirty years of growth means UW is a well-established company, not a here-today-gone-tomorrow supplier. Its parent company, Telecom Plus, is listed on the London Stock Exchange.

For you, the benefit is simple:

  • One supplier, one bill for your Gas, Electricity, Broadband, Mobile and Insurance.
  • Bigger savings the more you bundle, because UW rewards households who bring more services across.
  • A real person to talk to, a local Partner who knows you, rather than a call centre queue.

Wondering whether it would actually save you money? I've written an honest answer here: Is Utility Warehouse worth it?

Be part of the next 30 years

UW's story is really a story about people helping people. Every one of those 1.4 million customers was recommended by somebody.

If you like the idea of helping folk save money and earning an income doing it, you can become a UW Partner yourself. It costs £10 to join, then it's free for 3 months, and £3 a month after that. You work around your own life, part-time or full-time. If you're curious about the money side, have a read of how much UW Partners earn.

Or, if you'd just like to pass on the odd recommendation, you can become a UW Connector, which is completely free.
