Ofgem recently updated the typical consumption values (TDCV) it uses to calculate the headline price cap figure, lowering the assumed electricity and gas usage to better reflect how much energy the average household actually uses today (most homes use less than they did a few years ago). Under the old benchmark, the cap works out to £1,862. Under the new, lower-usage benchmark, it's £1,663.
The important bit: this isn't a price cut. Unit rates haven't dropped — the industry is just using a smaller "typical home" to do the maths. Your actual bill still depends on how much energy you use, not on which headline number gets quoted in the news.
