“UP AGAIN! Energy Bills Just Went Up” with a bill, a red arrow going up and a panicking Ember

Update, October 2026: since this post was written, the price cap rose again by 4% on 1 October, and forecasters expect another rise in January. Everything below about fixing your rate still applies, and it's more urgent now.

If your energy bill felt like it jumped this month, you're not imagining it. Ofgem's price cap rose by 13% from 1 July 2026, and with another increase expected in October, now is the moment to look at fixing your rate before it climbs further.

Energy Bills Just Went Up Again: How to Lock In a Lower Rate Before Winter

Why your bill might look confusing right now

You may have seen two very different numbers floating around: £1,862 and £1,663. Both are "correct". They're just measuring different things.

Ofgem recently updated the typical consumption values (TDCV) it uses to calculate the headline price cap figure, lowering the assumed electricity and gas usage to better reflect how much energy the average household actually uses today (most homes use less than they did a few years ago). Under the old benchmark, the cap works out to £1,862. Under the new, lower-usage benchmark, it's £1,663.

The important bit: this isn't a price cut. Unit rates haven't dropped. The industry is just using a smaller "typical home" to do the maths. Your actual bill still depends on how much energy you use, not on which headline number gets quoted in the news.

Fixed tariffs will save folk money

Energy Bills Just Went Up Again: Why it's worth fixing now, don't wait

A few reasons to act sooner rather than later:

  • The cap has already risen more than once this year and is forecast to rise again.
  • Fixing locks in your rate for the length of the contract, so you're protected even if the cap climbs further.
  • Sorting it now means one less thing to think about once the heating's on full.
Beat future price cap rises by moving to a fixed tariff

The easiest way to find out if you could save

Rather than guessing whether a fixed tariff would actually save you money, the quickest way to know is to compare your actual usage (not a generic estimate) against what you could be paying. I'll show you exactly how your current gas, electricity, broadband and mobile costs compare, and whether bundling them together could save you more.

Beyond energy: the bigger savings picture

Energy is usually just the start. Households that bundle their gas, electricity, broadband, mobile and even home insurance with one provider often get better overall value than shopping around for each separately. It also means one bill, one login and one point of contact instead of juggling four or five providers. If you're wondering whether that's right for you, read my honest take: Is Utility Warehouse worth it?
